What this track actually tests

The four corners of the round

Each capability below is a real round you'll sit. Surface them up front so prep aims at the right thing, not generic interview practice.

01 · Mental math

Sub-second arithmetic under pressure

80 of these in 8 minutes, the Optiver / IMC mental math screen. Fast estimation, base conversions, decimal-fraction arithmetic, drilled in the same shape as the live test.

02 · Market making

Quote, skew, and adverse selection

Bid-ask spread economics, inventory risk, adverse-selection toxicity, and the dynamic re-quoting problems that sit at the core of every market-maker desk's interview round.

03 · Options

Greeks, vol, and pricing intuition

Black-Scholes assumptions, Greeks-by-feel, skew, and the 'price me this exotic in 60 seconds' game that SIG and Akuna use to grade pricing intuition under pressure.

04 · Brain teasers

Logic puzzles and fitness-to-quote

Probability brain teasers, expected-value bets, and the multi-round 'place a market on this' game. Tests how you reason out loud when the answer isn't obvious. That's the trader round's actual filter.

Frequently asked

Trader track questions

Do I need a finance background to interview as a quant trader?
No. Optiver, IMC, and SIG hire heavily from non-finance backgrounds, what they care about is fast probabilistic reasoning under pressure. The mental-math screen is the literal first filter; coursework matters less than score.
What does a trader round actually look like?
Mental-math screen first, then a probability + brain-teaser round, then a market-making game where you quote a two-sided market on something abstract while the interviewer tries to pick you off. Some firms add an options-pricing round.
Is the trader track only for prop firms?
No. Citadel Securities, Jane Street, and HRT all run trader tracks alongside their dev/research tracks. The skill set differs (intuition vs. systems), but the firms are largely the same as the dev track.
Where does the compensation data come from?
From the /comp dataset: crowdsourced base + bonus + equity submissions from people on the desk plus verified hires. Trader bands have the widest spread because PnL allocations dominate.
